About Brendan
A dedicated music educator, Brendan Meier is currently director of bands at Paul J Gelinas JHS in the Three Village Central School District. He conducts the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade bands at Gelinas, as well as the jazz band and wind ensemble; both of which have received superior ratings at Music in the Parks festivals and the Long Island Music Festival. In addition to his core responsibilities, Brendan is the director of the Gelinas Theatre Company, the advisor for the Tri-M Jr. Music Honor Society, and assistant director for the Ward Melville Patriots Marching Band.
Brendan is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist that maintains a private studio based out of his home in Islip Terrace where he teaches beginners and middle school, high school, and college students. He successfully teaches clarinet, his primary instrument, at every age and level but his doubling capabilities also enable him to teach up to a high school level on all other woodwind instruments, including double reeds. Brendan excels in coaching students on various styles of music, preparing students on music or auditions for any ensemble, NYSSMA solos, and auditions for college music programs. He is also experienced with teaching students how to double on multiple woodwinds. Students from Brendan’s studio have scored highly at NYSSMA solo festivals, qualified for All-County or All-State ensembles, played in the top ensembles at their school, and been selected for groups such as Gemini Youth Orchestra, Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, and Nassau-Suffolk Performing Arts.
Brendan’s approach to teaching students centers on building and solidifying fundamentals on their instrument, teaching proper practice techniques, developing overall musicianship, and fostering a lifelong appreciation for music and the arts. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education with a concentration in special music education and a performance certificate on Clarinet from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. He also holds a Master of Music degree in Music Education with a concentration on multiple woodwind performance and pedagogy from Hofstra University. His primary teachers include Dr. Laurie Friedman, Dr. Raphael Sanders, Dr. Julianne Kirk-Doyle, Joel Levy, and Christopher Neske.
